14 Crochet Pet Clothes Patterns Free for Dogs and Cats

Crochet Pet Clothes Patterns

Crocheting clothes for your pets is one of the most fun things you can do with a hook and some yarn.

The projects are small, so they work up fast. Most use basic stitches you already know. And the results are genuinely adorable, whether you’re dressing up a tiny chihuahua or a grumpy cat who tolerates exactly three seconds of a photo shoot.

This post covers 15 free crochet pet clothes patterns for dogs and cats. Each one includes materials, tips, and step-by-step guidance to help you get started.

Before You Start: What Every Pet Crafter Should Know

Before you start any pet clothing project, there are a few things worth knowing.

Sizing is everything. Measure your pet before you begin. You’ll need the neck circumference, chest circumference, and back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Most free patterns include a size chart, so take those measurements first.

For yarn, cotton and machine-washable acrylic are your best friends. Pet clothes get dirty fast and need frequent washing. Avoid anything too fluffy or textured that could irritate your pet’s skin.

Use a slightly smaller hook than the yarn label suggests. This keeps stitches tight and gives the fabric more structure so it holds its shape on your pet.

Always do a quick fit check as you go. It’s much easier to adjust mid-project than to redo the whole thing at the end.

1. Cozy Crochet Dog Sweater Pattern

Cozy Crochet Dog Sweater Pattern

A classic dog sweater is the most practical piece you can make for a small breed. Chihuahuas, dachshunds, and toy poodles especially benefit from a little extra warmth in cooler months.

Materials needed: Worsted weight yarn, 5mm hook, yarn needle, scissors, stitch markers

Instructions:

Start with a foundation chain that fits snugly around your dog’s neck. For a small dog, this is usually around 24 to 30 chains depending on yarn thickness.

Join to work in the round. Work HDC rounds for the ribbed neck section, about 4 to 5 rounds.

Then work the body section in rows down the back. After several rows, create leg openings by chaining over 4 to 5 stitches on each side.

Continue working rows down the belly, joining at the sides.

Finish with a ribbed hem at the base and single crochet around the leg openings for a neat edge.

The key measurement to check is the chest girth. The sweater should be snug but not tight. You should be able to slide two fingers underneath comfortably.

2. Easy Cat Hoodie Crochet Design

Easy Cat Hoodie Crochet Design

Most cats won’t tolerate full outfits, but a soft hoodie slipped on quickly for a photo? Surprisingly manageable with a patient cat.

Materials needed: DK weight yarn, 4mm hook, yarn needle, optional drawstring cord

Instructions:

Start by crocheting the hood first. Work a rectangle in SC rows wide enough to cover your cat’s head from ear to ear. Fold it in half and seam the top edge to form the hood shape.

Pick up stitches along the open bottom edge of the hood and work the body downward in rows. Increase on each side every few rows to account for the chest.

Add leg openings after about 6 rows by chaining over the stitch count on each side.

Finish the hem and add a simple chain drawstring through the hood opening if you want it to actually stay on.

Keep this project lightweight. Heavy yarn will irritate a cat and they’ll shake it off immediately.

4. Warm Winter Coat for Small Dogs

Warm Winter Coat for Small Dogs

A winter coat is more structured than a sweater. It usually covers more of the belly and has a wider back panel to protect against wind and rain.

Materials needed: Bulky weight yarn, 6mm hook, yarn needle, 2 to 3 buttons or snaps

Instructions:

Start with the back panel. Chain a length equal to your dog’s back measurement from neck to tail. Work SC rows until the panel is wide enough to cover the back.

Work the neck collar separately as a ribbed strip. Sew it to the top of the back panel.

For the belly strap, work a narrower strip in SC rows. It should be long enough to wrap under the belly and attach to each side of the back panel.

Add button holes on one side of the belly strap and sew buttons to the other side.

Edge everything with SC in a contrast color for a clean, polished look.

5. Cute Crochet Dress for Cats

Cute Crochet Dress for Cats

A crochet dress for a cat is a small project that makes a huge statement in photos.

Materials needed: DK weight cotton yarn, 4mm hook, optional ribbon trim, yarn needle

Instructions:

Start at the neckline. Chain a number that fits loosely over your cat’s head. Join and work in rounds.

For the yoke, work a raglan-style increase every 4 stitches for the first 6 rounds. This creates the chest shaping.

Once the yoke is wide enough to sit across the shoulders, divide for the leg openings. Chain over each front leg position and continue working in the round.

Work the skirt section by adding increases every other round for flare. The more increases you add, the fuller the skirt.

Finish with a picot or shell edging at the hem. Add a ribbon tie at the back if needed to keep it in place.

Keep the length short so it doesn’t restrict movement or get caught on the legs.

Instructions:

7. Stylish Granny Square Pet Vest

Stylish Granny Square Pet Vest

Granny square vests are colorful, fun, and great for using up leftover yarn. They work well for medium dogs who don’t need the full coverage of a sweater.

Materials needed: Worsted yarn in 2 to 4 colors, 5mm hook, yarn needle

Instructions:

Make 4 to 6 granny squares depending on your dog’s size. Each square should be about 3 to 4 inches wide.

Lay them out in a 2 by 2 or 2 by 3 grid. Sew them together using a flat slip stitch join for a neat seam.

Add a SC border around the full vest to stabilize the edges.

Work a simple ribbed neck opening and two armhole edges. You can crochet directly into the side edges of the assembled squares for this.

Add a chest strap in SC that buttons or ties under the belly.

The colorwork possibilities are endless here. Try pastel combinations for spring or jewel tones for fall.

9. Soft Crochet Scarf for Pets

Soft Crochet Scarf for Pets

A pet scarf is the most low-stakes project you can make. No shaping, no assembly, just a long rectangle with fringe.

Materials needed: Soft worsted yarn, 5mm hook, yarn needle

Instructions:

Chain 8 stitches for a narrow scarf or 12 for a wider one.

Work SC or HDC rows until the scarf is long enough to tie loosely around your pet’s neck with a simple knot. For most small dogs and cats, 18 to 24 inches is plenty.

Add fringe by cutting 4-inch yarn lengths and pulling them through each end stitch with a crochet hook.

Tie it around the neck in a loose loose knot so it sits like a classic scarf. Never tie it tight enough to restrict breathing or movement.

10. Crochet Raincoat for Tiny Dogs

Crochet Raincoat for Tiny Dogs

A crochet raincoat sounds contradictory, but if you use a nylon or tightly crocheted water-resistant yarn, it genuinely works for light drizzle.

Materials needed: Nylon or tightly spun acrylic yarn, 4mm hook, optional snap closures, yarn needle

Instructions:

Start with the back panel. Chain the length of your dog’s back. Work SC rows tightly until the panel is wide enough.

Work the neck section separately as a wide ribbed collar and sew it to the top of the back panel.

For the hood, chain enough to form a rectangle that covers the head. Seam the top edge. Sew the open bottom edge to the neck collar.

Add side panels that wrap around the belly and secure with snap closures or buttons.

Work the entire piece in tightly packed single crochet to minimize gaps where water can get through.

Matching Pet and Owner Accessories

Matching sets are one of the sweetest trends in the crochet community and they make the most adorable photos.

The easiest place to start is with matching bandanas. Make one in a large size for yourself and a smaller version for your pet using the same yarn and stitch pattern.

You can also do matching beanies. Work a standard adult beanie pattern and a miniature version for your dog using the same colorwork.

Materials needed: Worsted yarn in 2 coordinating colors, 5mm hook, yarn needle

Instructions for matching bandanas:

For the owner bandana, chain 60 and work the same decreasing triangle pattern as the pet bandana in pattern 4. Scale up proportionally.

For the pet bandana, use the exact pattern from section 4.

Use the same yarn color and stitch count ratio so they look like a genuine set. Tie yours around your neck and your pet’s around their collar, then take approximately one hundred photos.
